Grades of Travertine Stone

Premium or First Grade
This grade tends to be the quote highest level of the grades. When produced, it is cut the most evenly thickness-wise, has very little filler, and is the most uniform in look. First-grade travertine also comes in the most color variation sand the tiles are double filled to ensure the most level of the grades. This grade tends to be the easiest to polish to all the sheens, including the highest of shines.

Standard or Second Grade
Standard grade is also cut uniform in thickness but there will tend to be more filling needed. These tend to be honed styles of travertine. The fill is double filled but some of the filled areas will be the entire thickness of the stone and the filled areas may be more prominent and more noticeable.

Commercial or Third Grade
Commercial grade tends to be more uneven, is not cut perfectly in thickness, and will have more fill variation. This grade is only factory-filled and not hand-filled before distribution, so small pits and holes may be found at the time of installation. Third-grade tiles tend to be what tumbled travertine is designated within. The higher sheens will be hard to achieve and this grade is more of the natural stone look and a more rustic feeling.
Types of Travertine Stone
Classic Travertine
This type of travertine is characterized by its neutral and warm tones, usually ranging from beige to light brown. Classic travertine often features subtle variations in color and is known for its timeless and elegant appearance.
Red Travertine
Red travertine is characterized by its reddish-brown coloration, which can range from subtle hints to more pronounced tones. The warm and earthy hues of red travertine make it a distinctive choice for various applications.
Yellow Travertine
As the name suggests, yellow travertine exhibits various shades of yellow, ranging from light to deep golden tones. This type of travertine can bring a bright and vibrant feel to interior or exterior spaces.
Silver Travertine
Silver travertine is notable for its cool gray and silver hues. This type of travertine is often chosen for its contemporary and modern aesthetic, providing a sleek and stylish appearance.
● Tumbled: It has rounded edges which contribute to its distinctive look; it has more texture than the brushed travertine and also looks more weathered and aged.
● Polished: It is glossy and shiny, the colours are richer and they are very smooth and flat. They tend to be slippery when wet and are stain resistant.
● Honed: It is the commonest type of travertine flooring; the surface has been polished flat, but not glossy unlike the polished travertine.
● Brushed: It shares some features with tumbled travertine and a wire brush is used to abrade the surface to improve its texture.

Applications of Travertine Stone
Flooring
If you're aiming for a rustic or refined look, travertine flooring is an excellent choice. They are available in polished, honed, tumbled, or brushed finishes that complement almost any decor.
Wall Cladding
Travertine can transform ordinary walls into extraordinary focal points. Whether you choose to cover entire walls or an accent wall, travertine adds texture and visual interest to both interior and exterior spaces.
Countertops
Travertine countertops are eye-catching. They provide a unique surface that adds character and sophistication to the space. But be careful not to use it for food prep since it can absorb colors and smells.
Backsplashes
Travertine backsplashes not only protect walls from splashes and spills but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of your kitchen or bathroom. Rather than looking for intricate tiling designs, travertine’s natural colors and patterns provide visual interest.
Showers
Harkening back to its watery roots, travertine is a popular choice for shower areas. It can easily be wiped clean of soap scum and water spots. If not well-sealed and maintained, however, the constant exposure to water can create pits in its surface. Like what happens in the natural environment, travertine is prone to deterioration if not properly maintained.
Properties of Travertine Stone
Porosity
One of the defining characteristics of travertine is its high porosity. The stone is formed by the precipitation of minerals from water, creating a porous structure. This porosity can affect the stone’s ability to absorb liquids and may require the application of sealers to reduce staining.
Durability
Travertine is generally durable, making it suitable for use in high-traffic areas. However, its durability can vary based on factors such as the type of travertine, the finish applied, and the specific application. Proper care and maintenance are essential to preserve its appearance and longevity.
Density
Travertine has a moderate to high density, contributing to its strength and durability. The density can vary among different types of travertine, influencing factors such as load-bearing capacity and resistance to wear.
Color Variation
Travertine exhibits a range of colors, including white, cream, beige, tan, brown, and rust. The specific coloration is influenced by the presence of minerals and impurities during the stone’s formation, providing designers and homeowners with a variety of aesthetic options.
Veining and Patterns
Travertine often features natural veining, patterns, and textures that add character and uniqueness to each piece. These variations contribute to the stone’s aesthetic appeal and can be highlighted or minimized depending on the cutting and finishing processes.
Polishability
Travertine has the ability to take a high polish, which enhances its visual appeal. The polishing process reveals the stone’s natural luster, giving it a smooth and glossy finish. This property makes travertine suitable for decorative applications such as countertops and flooring.
Workability
Travertine is relatively easy to cut and shape, making it a favored material for intricate carvings and architectural details. Its workability allows for a variety of finishes, including polished, honed, tumbled, and brushed, each providing a distinct look and feel.
Thermal Insulation
Travertine has natural thermal insulation properties, meaning it can help regulate temperature and maintain a comfortable environment. This characteristic makes it suitable for flooring in both indoor and outdoor spaces.
Sustainability
Quarrying practices and the environmental impact of travertine extraction vary, but responsible practices can make travertine a sustainable choice. Some quarries implement measures to minimize environmental impact and rehabilitate the sites after extraction.
Versatility
Travertine is a versatile stone used in various applications, including flooring, countertops, wall cladding, decorative elements, and outdoor landscaping. Its diverse range of colors and finishes allows for flexibility in design.
Step 1: Creating a Flat Surface for Honing
Attach the 120-grit diamond resin bond to the floor machine. Do not start at the edge of the floor but leave ¼ inch from the wall. Keep the floor wet. Slide the floor machine from the side to side. Keep your movements in parallel to the wall. Make sure that the surface stays wet, so reapply water as necessary. Water is the medium that keeps friction down. Also, note that if you leave the floor machine in one place it will pit the surface of the floor tiles.
Step 2: Fine Grit Final Hone
Remove the 120-grit pad from the machine and put on the 115-grit pad. Make sure you re-wet the floor and follow the same path you used when you first passed over the floor tiles. The grit is much finer on this pad and will help to smooth out the rough surface made by the first pad.
Step 3: Begin Polishing
Begin polishing by replacing the 115-grit pad with the 220-grit pad. Again, wet the tiles. You will have to make sure that you wet the travertine tiles often because the finish is gone and the tiles are very porous, and they will absorb the water quickly. Repeat the same parallel pattern using the 220-grit polishing pad.
Step 4: Smoothing the Surface of the Travertine
Put the 400-grit pad onto the floor machine. Pass the floor machine from the wall outward, again making sure the floor is wet. Also continue on the same parallel path that has been created in the previous steps. Don’t forget to keep the machine moving to ensure you don’t create any pits or valleys in the surface of your travertine tiles.
Step 5: Complete the Polish
Finally, use the last floor machine pad, the 800-grit pad. Repeat the same path and the same steps that you have been doing. Remember to keep the floor wet and the floor machine moving. After you have finished this step you will see a nice polished finish on your travertine tiles.
Step 6: Finishing
Use a soft mop and thoroughly clean the floor, mopping with a soap solution and then using a clean mop as many times as it takes to remove the soap from the floor. Apply a tile sealant to the travertine tile surface using a damp sponge mop and let it completely dry. Put a wet floor sign up and barricade the area for at least 24 hours.
