Installation Process of Culture Stone

Prepare your wall inside. First, measure how much space the wall covers. Then, cut the wire mesh so it fits exactly. It’s important that wire mesh pieces do not cover one another. Use a tool to attach the mesh firmly to the wall, placing attachments every 4 to 6 inches.

Next, put a layer of mastic over your wall that has wire mesh. With your flat tool, spread the mastic to fill all gaps between the mesh and the wall already there. Ensure it sticks well to its surface. Let the mastic dry for 24 hours before starting with your stone.

Start putting your cultured stone in place from the bottom and move upwards. Spread mastic on the back of each stone and press it onto the wall. Like natural stone, these stones will vary in size. You might need to cut some to fit. If you use a wet saw for cutting, make sure the stone is dry before you spread mastic on it.
Tip: Use enough mastic so that a little squeezes out when you press the stone onto the wall. But, you don’t want so much that it spills out past the edges where two stones meet.

Let your stone dry for 72 hours before you seal it. Use this guide to learn how to clean your stone after you have installed it.

The Differences Between Culture Stone and Natural Stone Veneer

Availability

Natural stone must be quarried from the earth, which can limit its availability in some regions. Because culture stone is artificially created and can be customized, different styles and looks are essentially always available.

Weight

The heavy weight of natural stone adds to its expense and makes it difficult, if not impossible, to use on some structures. Culture stone is lighter than natural stone, making it more versatile for what types of structures it can be installed over.

Installation process

Culture stone and thin stone veneer will both require some masonry. Natural stone can be cut or chipped to better fit where it’s needed, whereas culture stone cannot, as the material will be damaged.

Appearance

Part of the appeal of natural stone is that no two pieces will look the same. Though culture stone pieces will vary, some may share some similarity in design, based on the casts used to shape the stone. There may be a wider availability of different color and style option of culture stone, depending on the manufacturer.

Cost

Culture stone tends to be less expensive than real stone, though well-designed pieces may be as costly as real stone veneer. The masonry expenses of installation will run about the same.

Longevity

Natural stone is essentially guaranteed quality for life as the color will not fade and the material is difficult to damage. culture stone will fade in color over time when exposed to the elements and may require touch up after a roughly a decade and is easier to damage.

Culture Stone Veneer Color Considerations

Architectural style plays a significant role in color selection. A traditional or rustic-style home may benefit from earthy tones like brown, beige or gray, while a modern or contemporary-style home will look sleek with vibrant colors like black, white, or shades of blue.

Existing exterior elements such as the colors of the roof, siding and trim should be taken into account to create a cohesive and balanced appearance.

Surrounding landscapes are often considered to ensure the home blends with its environment.

Neighborhood character should also be taken into account. Whether to use a veneer that blends with the surrounding homes or a bold color that makes it stand out from the crowd is an important design choice.

The climate and natural lighting in the area are factors to consider. In regions with intense sunlight, lighter colors may be preferred to reflect heat and keep energy costs down.

Last but not least, homeowner preferences are of course crucial in the decision-making process. Masonry professionals should guide their clients’ choices to ensure they fulfill the vision for their home.

FAQ

Q: How long does culture stone last?

A: Culture stone, also known as manufactured stone, can last 20–75 years with proper maintenance.

Q: How are culture stone products made?

A: Culture stone products are cast in molds taken from carefully-selected natural stone, using a process that faithfully captures even the faintest detail. Each color and texture uses its own blend of portland cement, lightweight natural aggregates and iron oxide pigments. Even on close examination, these manufactured stones look and feel just like the originals.

Q: How do culture stone products compare in cost with natural stone?

A: The installed cost of culture stone products is usually much lower than the installed cost of natural stone. culture stone products require no additional footings, foundations or wall ties, and installation time will be considerably less than when using natural stone.

Q: Does culture stone fade?

A: Because of its light weight and lower cost, culture stone is a great choice for large outdoor projects. However, because of how it will fade over time when be exposed to the elements, think carefully about placing in areas that receive constant, direct sunlight.

Q: How do you take care of culture stone?

A: Never use detergents with bleach, any type of acid, or a pressure washer. Rinse the stone/brick with water to remove loose debris. Using a circular motion scrub the dirtiest areas first using a medium bristle brush. Rinse the cleaned area thoroughly, removing all detergent and suds.

Q: Can you pressure wash culture stones?

A: Do not use wire brushes, acids or vinegars to clean your manufactured stone veneer, and do not pressure wash or sandblast. Sealing is not required or recommended; if you choose to use a sealant, make sure it is a silane siloxane-based breathable masonry sealer. Test on a small inconspicuous area first.

Q: Is culture stone expensive?

A: Culture stone siding costs $10 to $35 per square foot installed or $10,000 to $35,000 total for a house. Adding culture stone to part of the front of a house costs $1,000 to $3,500. culture stone, also called manufactured stone, is a painted or stained concrete mix that mimics natural stone siding.
